Items That Can Actually Be Recycled

Recycling is an easy and really effective way to make a difference for our planet. When you recycle, you help save energy, conserve natural resources, reduce the amount of waste going in the landfills, and protect the environment. But if you want to know even more about recycling and why you should not just throw away your old items, just keep reading.

Recycling aluminum is actually a big deal

According to the Aluminum Association, recycling just one aluminum can saves energy that is enough to listen to a full album on an iPod. They also report that every ton of aluminum that’s recycled reduces greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 13 tons. However, we can do even better because Americans throw away nearly $1 billion worth of aluminum every year.

It doesn’t take only trees to produce paper

To be more specific, it takes 98 tons of resources to make 1 ton of paper. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 19,075 gallons of waste water is produced during the production of 1 ton of copy paper. The association also mentions that when this ton of paper is recycled, it saves enough energy to power an average American home for 6 months. So when you recycle old paper, you don’t only reduce the number of trees that are cut down, but also save water, oil, and energy.

Your old shoes can be put to good use

Instead of throwing away your old and worn shoes, you can send them to Nike’s Reuse-a-Shoe program. They have been collecting shoes that otherwise would have ended up in the landfill for the past 20 years. They accept any brand of shoes and recycle them.

Old makeup packaging can be recycled

The brand Origins will recycle the containers of used up makeup. The brand doesn’t matter – just bring your empty containers to your local Origins store, and they will gladly take it off your hands. They were the first company to create a recycling program back in 2009.
